What is the Accessibility Act in Austria about?
The Accessibility Act (BaFG) ensures from June 2025 that websites, online shops, apps, and similar digital offerings are easily usable for everyone – including people with visual, hearing, or mobility impairments as well as older people.
An accessible website also has the advantage of often being found better on Google – because Google is, so to speak, „the largest blind user“ on the internet.
Who is affected by this?
Accessibility in Austria
When is a website „accessible“?
Accessibility means that your website is also accessible to people with disabilities – e.g. for: people with visual impairments or blindness, users of screen readers, people with motor or cognitive impairments.
The technical basis for this is the internationally recognized WCAG 2.1 guidelines (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) with the levels Level A (must), AA (should), and AAA (can). In Austria, WCAG 2.1 Level AA is the standard for legal accessibility.
In detail, this concerns the following areas:
- Texts are accessible in many ways: Content should be prepared so that it can be accessed through different sensory channels can be perceived – for example as visible text and at the same time read aloud by screen readers.
- Structured content and code: Headings, paragraphs, lists, and other elements are correctly defined as such so that screen readers and other assistive tools can capture and read the content correctly can.
- Accessible forms: Input fields are clearly labeled, provided with understandable instructions and there is helpful feedback in case of errors.
- Images have alternative texts (alt texts): This allows users with visual impairments to understand what is shown in an image. This also brings significant improvements for search engine optimization (SEO).
- Good readability and visual clarity: Texts are sufficiently large and have enough contrast with the background. Colors alone may not be used, for example, to convey information.
- Operation with the keyboard is possible: All functions can also be used without a mouse – for example, with the tab key and enter key.
- Consistent operation: Menus, buttons and other recurring elements behave the same everywhere – making orientation easier.
- Clear language and simple navigation: Users quickly find their way around and know where to click to reach their goal.

How to become accessible
Step 1: Basic check
Only in autumn 2025:
€ 150,00 instead of € 300,00
To find out where your website stands in terms of accessibility, we conduct a quick check of the „must-haves“. You will receive information on whether your website is already accessible and, if not, what the fundamental barriers are. This gives you a good starting point to decide on the next steps.
Step 2: Detailed review and recommendations for action
For a list of specific recommendations to achieve accessibility, we need to take a closer look at your website. For this, we offer two packages:
Comprehensive review – WCAG Level AA
- Review of the homepage and two other representative subpages (more extensive review possible with a separate offer)
- Detailed review including forms, navigation & contrasts
- Goal: full compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA (as required by law)
- Price: € 1,400.00
Basic Audit – WCAG Level A
- Review of the homepage
- Examination of fundamental barriers
- Goal: full compliance with WCAG 2.1 A
- Price: € 350.00
As part of our accessibility audit, we create a clear audit report based on the criteria of WCAG 2.1.
We record each reviewed requirement in a clearly structured table and state the result of the audit as well as a brief problem description if a point is not or only partially met.
Unlike many other providers, we do not rely solely on automated tools. We also conduct manual tests, in order to identify barriers that cannot be detected purely technically – for example, in the comprehensibility of content, logical focus guidance, or with individually designed controls. The result is a well-founded and practical report.
Especially helpful: For every barrier found, we provide a clear, actionable recommendation. This way, the test report can be forwarded directly to the responsible agency or web designer – they will then know exactly what needs to be improved and how. The report thus serves not only as documentation, but also as a practical working basis for the accessible further development of the website.
IMPORTANT: The costs for the test report as well as for the recommendations are included in the prices of the basic and comprehensive tests.
Step 3: Achieving accessibility
After the creation of the test report with recommendations comes the implementation of the necessary improvements. These can either be carried out directly by your existing agency – or, if desired, by our experienced team.
If you would like to commission us with the implementation, we will prepare a concrete, transparent offer for you in advance based on the points listed in the audit report. This way, you have full control over effort, costs, and timeline. Our goal is to make your website specifically and efficiently more accessible, without unnecessary changes or surprises.
